St. Nicholas Day is a celebration of mercy, warmth, joy, kindness, and love. I want to believe that it will remain forever in the memory of little children, and, perhaps, when they want to help those in need. Good deeds are always relevant, and they acquire their characteristics and charm on the eve of Christmas and New Year holidays. Our dear benefactors, helpers, like-minded people, and caring people, we turn to you for help for 10 families raising children with terrible diseases (cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, cancer, orphan patients). Left alone with their problems, such families spend a lot of resources, effort, and finances on the treatment and maintenance of the life of their seriously ill children.

The calendar is constantly approaching St. Nicholas Day, which means that a very special and exciting time has begun for not only us, adults, but also for children. Every year, St. Nicholas comes from heaven to earth to wrap every child's heart with love, to put such long-awaited gifts under each pillow or directly into little hands. Holy – he is also holy in order not to divide people into "more necessary" and "more important", especially our children. Most of all St. Nicholas is awaited by children who live in orphanages or boarding schools or are in needy families.
For 17 years, our foundation, Caritas HOBF, has been trying to do everything so that people who are in critical life situations feel dignified, believe that their life can get better. It is sad and painful to see every day the despair of these lonely, elderly people, the extreme poverty in which they somehow have to survive for a penny, for which it is difficult to buy at least something so as not to die starvation. We are talking about such a level of poverty when you have to choose whether to buy bread or essential medicines for the last money when you pay for utilities and you have to eat almost nothing until you receive your next pension.
Of all the holidays, the most secret and desirable among children is the holiday of Nicholas. Children are waiting for him with a special joy. There are children in our city who have worked especially hard to meet St. Nicholas: one has made the first steps at the age of 7 or started talking at the age of 6, the other has time to study at school and take care of five younger siblings; the third is malnourished every day and nowhere to sleep. But each of them found the strength to look at the world with joyful eyes and to encourage others, and someone also learned to pray... and not only for himself but also for the next "parents" who left him again in the orphanage or for his mother that "sold" her child.
When asked to tell about herself, Oleksandra Mikhailovna modestly and with a smile, as if she was immersed in the spit of the past years, starts her story, reluctantly, and constantly asks whether she is taking our working time, because she appreciates the time of others. In the first words, ordinary everyday history is quite typical of our society.
September 1st is just around the corner. Among the children who will soon go to school are those who will not have basic things for learning, such as notebooks, pens, pencils, paints, pencil cases, and school bags. Each class has children whose parents are not able to buy them the basic necessities. We want to provide children from low-income families with school supplies for successful studying, and thus give them a holiday.
In addition to the joyful expectations of the beginning of the school year, there is such a difficult thing as preparing for school, which is a rather difficult task for families in difficult living conditions. They do not have the ability to buy backpacks on their own, because in addition to it, many other things are needed so that the child can study at school. Will the joyful holiday of the First Bell for 50 children of the Children and Familу Center of Caritas Volyn Foundation depends on the good and not indifferent people!
We cannot but help. Her name is Halyna. She has 4 children. Last year her children received 2 school bags with necessary stationery for her children. This year she has come to ask whether she can count on our help in preparation children to school. We were nearly ready to say "No, as we have many children and for the sake of equal opportunities try to help a new family each year". But suddenly we turned our look down and saw that the woman’s child standing near her was wearing shoes with the sole falling apart and being tied to the shoe with ordinary lace. "For sure, yes, you can count on our support.
For parents, apart from the joy that the child goes to the first class and the satisfaction of the fact that their son or daughter will continue their studies in the next or graduate class, on September 1, they also bring financial troubles – because the burden of "procurement" of school supplies falls on their shoulders. And for families who are in difficult life circumstances, this is a truly global problem. Can a child count on a new hometown and quality schooling if parents are not able to provide it with full nutrition, medicine, hygiene, and clothing according to the season?
Homelessness is a big social problem in our country. Losing a home, people also lose the place where they can satisfy the basic needs in food, hygiene and rest. Several years ago our organization founded shelter for the homeless with the aim to give the second chance for a better life for homeless people ready to fight for their lives. Also, every year we arrange a common celebration of Christmas and Easter for the homeless and needy people of our town, to remind them about the better life they deserve. This year we are waiting for 100 people to come to Easter breakfast and ask you to help us to purchase food for preparation of Easter breakfast and making of food kits.
